  1.     This document provides a crash course on playing the game.  This

  15.     1. INTRODUCTION

  17.     Foobtall Fanatic is text based soccer manager simulation.  Our 
  18. premise is European teams have banned together to form a European super 
  19. league.  The league consists of 4 divisons with 16 teams.  You play a 
  20. 28 game/30 week regular season, with a 18 week off season.  There are also
  21. 4 cups to be won (see CUPS for more information).  The top three regular 
  22. season finishers are promoted to the next division except for the first 
  23. division, and the bottom three are relegated.  Relegation from the fourth 
  24. division leads to your termination.

  26.     You are in charge of all apsects of running a football club.  All 
  27. the hiring and firing of players and personel is up to you.  You must 
  28. select the starting 11, run practices, promote youth players, make 
  29. treatment decisions on injured players, setting ticket prices, and much 
  30. more.

  32.     2. HOW TO PLAY

  34.     Footy Fanatic is keyboard driven and does not use a mouse.  The 
  35. most important keys are the cursor keys (the ones with the arrows on them),
  36. the Escape key (Esc, top left-hand corner), and the Enter key.  Every 
  37. screen has a highlighter that is controlled by the cursor keys.  To 
  38. execute a command highlight the option and press Enter.  Some screens allow
  39. you to use the number keys to bypass highlighting and pressing Enter.  Use 
  40. the Escape key to exit a screen.
  41.  
  42.     There are to modes of play: generic and realistic.  Generic mode
  43. ranks and places the teams in the 4 divisions at random.  In generic mode,
  44. Ajax could be the worst team in the league.  The players will be assigned
  45. fictional/random abilities.  No matter what team you select, you will begin 
  46. in the 4th division in 16th place.
  47.     Realistic mode ranks the the top 48 teams according to domestic and
  48. cup performances over the last five years.  Should you choose Ajax and play
  49. the realistic version, you will begin in the 1st division.  Should you
  50. select a team that is not in the top 48, your team will be replace the 48th
  51. ranked team (16th in the 4th division).

  53.     On-line help can be accessed through the F1 key.  A window will pop
  54. up into the middle of the screen with instructions.  Some of the windows 
  55. have more information than the window can fit.  Use the Up/Down cursor keys
  56. to scroll.  Anytime you see <Enter> in the on-line help it means press the 
  57. Enter key.

  59.     Player positions have been colour coded: red names=keepers

  107.        3. CUPS
  108.  
  109. EFL - When is it played?  During the regular season. Weeks 2/4, 7/9, 12/14,
  110.     17/19, 22/24 and the final on week 30. 
  111.     - Who's in it?  All the teams from all the divisions.
  112.     - Format?  Two leg series, home and away.  Final is one game.  
  113.     - Who moves on?  Series are decided by total goals.  Penalty shots only
  114.     used if tied after second game.

  116. Elite - When is it played?  During the regular season. Weeks 8, 16, 26 and 
  117.     31.
  118.       - Who's in it?  First division teams only.
  119.       - Format?  One game.
  120.       - Who moves on?  Winner fo the match.  Penalty shots can decide 
  121.     winner.

  123. Toto - When is it played?  During the off season.  Round 1 on weeks 5,6,7, 
  124.      Round 2 on weeks 9,10,11, Round 3 on weeks 13,14,15, Final on week 17.
  125.      - Who's in it?.  4th, 5th and 6th place finishers from each 
  126.      division plus four European guest teams.  
  127.      - Format?  Round robin.  4 sections of 4 teams.  Top 2 adavance.  
  128.      Top 8 are divided into 2 divisions.  Another round robin.  Top 4 move 
  129.      on.  Last 4 play one more round robin.  Final two play one game for 
  130.      Toto Cup.

  132. World Club Cup - When is it played?  Week seventeen of off season.
  133.            - Who's in it?  Top finisher from the 1st division, and an 
  134.            international squad.
  135.            - Format?  One game.
  136.            - Who moves on?  Seek help if you can't figure this out.

  139.         In Cup matches, if the final result after regulation time cannot
  140. decide a winner, the teams will play two additional 15 minute halves.  If
  141. there is still no winner then the game will be decided by penalty
  142. shoot-out.

  144.         When viewing cup results you may come across something such as:
  145.                  Team A (2)+ 3:3 (2) Team B
  146.  
  147.        (1) and (2) mean that after regular time the game ended undecided
  148. without a clear winner with a 2:2 result.  In this case after extra time
  149. the score was 3:3.  The "+" designates that Team A won the penalty
  150. shoot-out.

  154.     4. TRANSFERS

  156.     You can get players from the transfer market and direct approach at
  157. all times except for weeks 24 through 32 during the regular season.  
  158. Should you buy a player during the regular season, and that player has 
  159. already played a cup match for his previous team, he will not be eligible 
  160. to play cup matches for your squad.

  162.     5.  PLAYERS ON LOAN

  164.     Other clubs may offer you players on loan.  You will responsible 
  165. for paying their salary while they are with your club.  They will also not
  166. be eligilbe to play cup matches for you if they have already played for 
  167. the team they are on loan from.

  169.     6. FINANCES

  171.     There are several sources of income, and many expenses.  Do not run
  172. the club into bankruptcy.  Need money sell a player or ask the chairman for
  173. a loan.

  175.     7. STUCK

  177.     If you get stuck somewhere, hit the Escape key.  Remember this is a
  178. beta version.  It has not been fully debugged.  We are releasing the beta 
  179. version because so many people have asked to have a peek at Football 
  180. Fanatic.  If the game crashes and/or stalls your system please don't send 
  181. us flame mail.
